Core Industry Knowledge of Mode 2 Portable EV Charger (IC-CPD)

1. Basic Definition

Portable AC EV chargers are universally named IC-CPD (In-Cable Control and Protection Device) in the industry, governed by international standard IEC 62752:2018, classified as Mode 2 EV charging equipment, commonly called "portable EVSE". Equipped with an integrated smart control box, it can be directly plugged into household 220V sockets without professional wallbox wiring, serving as the mainstream charging solution for home daily use and road emergency charging.

2. Core Working Principle

Ordinary household sockets lack overload and leakage protection. The IC-CPD control box embeds an intelligent chip, which communicates with the vehicle BMS (Battery Management System) in real time via PWM pilot signal:

Handshake with EV before charging to identify the maximum allowable charging current of the vehicle;

Dynamically adjust output current (switchable among 8A/10A/13A/16A) to match circuit load capacity;

Continuously monitor voltage, current and cable temperature, and cut off power instantly once leakage, overcurrent, overheating or undervoltage faults occur.

3. Dual-Standard Compatibility Logic (Type 2 EU & GB/T China)

Type 2 Connector: Complies with IEC 62196-2 global standard, standard fitting for imported EVs in Europe and Southeast Asia, supporting single/three-phase AC charging up to 43kW;

GB/T Connector: Defined by China national standard GB/T 20234.2, mandatory standard for all domestic new energy vehicles in China;

Dual-standard EVSE adopts unified internal communication protocol, only differing in physical plug structure, compatible with both vehicle types without extra adapters.

4. Industrial Significance of IP55 Protection Grade

IP55 means dust-protected and splash-proof, the minimum compliance protection grade for outdoor portable chargers: Grade 5 dust resistance prevents short circuits caused by dust accumulation; Grade 5 water resistance resists rain splashes and car washing water. The operating temperature range must cover -20℃ ~ +50℃ to fit climates in most regions worldwide.

5. Mandatory Industrial Safety Certifications

Products exported to EU must pass CE certification (based on EN IEC 61851-1, EN 62752); domestic sales in China need RoHS compliance. The whole unit integrates Type A + 6mA DC residual current protection to avoid fire risks caused by DC leakage, a mandatory configuration for premium portable EVSE.
